Home of the Explorers' Hall of Fame.
Complementing the rich visual history of the Northern Goldfields, the Great Beyond Explorers' Hall of Fame utilises cutting edge technology to bring to life the characters and stories of the past.
Step back in time with several notable Explorers, who led challenging expeditions through Central Australia during the mid to late 19th Century, as they recount their stories of hardship and bravery. Discover what it was like for women and pioneers living and working on the Goldfields during the pioneer days and learn about the valuable industries that sustain the inland.
The Great Beyond Visitor Centre houses a gift shop and the Horizon's Cafe.
The visitor centre can also issue entry permits to Aboriginal Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, issue National Parks passes in Western Australia, and book tickets for the Goldfields Express and Goldrush Tours. They stock an extensive range of maps, guidebooks, souvenirs and gifts.
The Great Beyond Visitor Centre is open 9.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 1.00pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays....
The Great Central Road runs for more than 1,100 kilometres from Laverton to Yulara. Along the way you will see a range of great outback attractions. Check out the ochre bluff of Giles Breakaway, Lake Throssel, and the wildflowers at Lake Yeo Nature Reserve, Peegull Waterhole, Caves, Emperor Springs, Petermann Ranges, Lasseter's Cave and the Docker River. Keep a look out in the distance as Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and Uluru (Ayers Rock) appear on the horizon.
The road is generally well formed; though expect corrugations, bulldust, potholes, rocky outcrops, and soft sandy riverbeds along the way. Supplies, accommodation and camping are available at roadhouses along the way, though it is best to check availability and opening times prior to departure.
It is recommended that you register with the police at the beginning and end of your journey and carry communications equipment with you. If you plan to enter Aboriginal land you will need to obtain permits, contact the Department of Indigenous Affairs for more information.
